Questions you might ask

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT THE FIRST TREATMENT?

Your first treatment will last about an hour and a quarter. I will take a complete case history during which I will ask you some questions about your symptoms and various aspects of your health and lifestyle. You will also have plenty of time to tell me of any concerns you have at the moment.

I will also look at your tongue and feel your pulse. This is an important part of diagnosis and allows me to get a good picture of your particular pattern of imbalances.

Once I have determined the likely causes of your condition I will select the most appropriate acupuncture points. I will then insert the needles which usually stay in place for about twenty minutes.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

The needles are very fine, some hardly more than a hair’s width. You will feel very little as the needles are inserted. Once the body’s Qi has been reached you will feel a tingling, numbness, spreading or dull achey sensation. Many people report a tingling feeling going around the body.

WHAT WILL I FEEL LIKE AFTERWARDS?

Most people feel very relaxed during the treatment and afterwards and often have a feeling of increased energy and well-being.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Each person is different and the number of treatments will depend upon the severity and duration of the problem. You will probably need a course of treatment. I will review your progress with you and discuss your particular needs with you.

IS IT SAFE?

I adhere to the British Acupuncture Council Code of Safe Practice which lays down strict standards of hygiene and safety. I use pre-sterilised disposable needles.

Surveys show that acupuncture is a very safe treatment and adverse effects are rarely reported. These are usually minor (mild bruising, dizziness or nausea lasting a short time)

SHOULD I TELL MY DOCTOR?

If you are receiving medical treatment, it is a good idea to tell your doctor that you are having acupuncture. The acupuncture may enable you to stop taking any medication but you will do this in consultation with your doctor. I will ask you if you are taking any medication and will take this into account when devising a treatment for you.
